Basic Rules of Pickleball Scoring:

    • Pickleball scoring is based on a rally scoring system, which means that points can be scored by both the serving and receiving teams.

    •  In pickleball, points are only scored by the serving team.

        Scoring in pickleball

        • Points are only scored by the serving team.
        • If the serving team wins a rally, they score a point and continue to serve.
        • If the receiving team wins the rally, they gain the serve but do not score a point.
        • The first side to reach 11 points and lead by 2 points wins the game.

Scoring in Doubles and Singles Matches

In doubles pickleball, the scoring system is based on a rally scoring method, meaning that points can be won by both the serving and receiving teams. Here's how scoring works in doubles play:
              • Serving Team Scores: The serving team will continue to serve and score points until they commit a fault (such as hitting the ball out of bounds or into the net) or lose the rally.
              • Receiving Team Scores: If the receiving team wins the rally, they will gain the serve and have the opportunity to score points. The receiving team can only score points when they are serving.
              • Serving Rotation: In doubles play, both players on a team have the opportunity to serve and score points. The team will alternate serving between the two players until they lose the serve.
              • Winning the Game: A game in doubles pickleball is typically played to 11 points, and a team must win by at least 2 points. If the score reaches 10-10, the game continues until one team has a 2-point advantage.
              • Switching Sides: In pickleball, players switch sides of the court after each game. This helps to ensure fairness in terms of any court or environmental advantages.
              • Match Point: To win a match, a team must win two out of three games. Each game is played to 11 points, and a team must win by at least 2 points.

In singles pickleball, scoring follows the same basic rules as doubles play, but with a few key differences:
                    • Serving: The player serving must serve from behind the baseline and aim to land the ball in the diagonally opposite service court.
                    • Receiving: The receiving player must let the serve bounce once before returning it. After the serve, both players can volley the ball (hit it before it bounces) or play it off the bounce.
                    • Faults: Common faults include serving out of bounds, stepping into the non-volley zone (the kitchen) before the ball bounces, and failing to let the serve bounce once before returning it.
                    • Scoring: Points are only scored by the serving player. If the serving player wins a rally, they score a point and continue serving. If the receiving player wins a rally, they do not score a point but gain the serve.
                    • Winning the game: The game is typically played to 11 points, and a player must win by at least 2 points. If the score reaches 10-10, play continues until one player has a 2-point lead.

                          Common Mistakes in Keeping Score

One common mistake in keeping score in pickleball is forgetting to switch sides after each game. It's important to switch sides to account for any advantages or disadvantages that may exist due to the court or weather conditions.

To win at pickleball, focus on consistency and placement. Aim to keep the ball in play and place your shots where your opponents are not.
